York Prepartory Academy

I have a couple of questions that I would like answered by those of you involved.

What is the name of the curriculum provider?

Who is the headmaster?

What is "daily character building education segments'?

What type of community service will be mandated?

Will there be prayer?

Will creationism be taught?

What is your justification for taking public funds away from the public schools?

I think that's a good start and Hood, if you gave me these answers on the other thread I pre-emptively apologize...like I explained, it was too tedious to find it.

Charter Schools

Some of what you have asked looks familiar, but not all. So, if you did ask before and I did not respond, it was purely that I missed it.

Off the subject, but what happened to the forum today? Posts were posting, but not to the recent comments. Made it hard to keep up with everything. Weird.

Let me preface my response with the caveat that I am not on the board nor do I have any say in these matters except as a parent who is interested in having my children enrolled. Ultimately, I would suggest you contact those who are planning and writing the charter. I believe there is a link from the web site.

With that said, what I do know or believe that I know:

What is the name of the curriculum provider?

I do not think that has been decided yet as the charter has not been approved

Who is the headmaster?

Again, don't think that has been decided yet, but will by the board and parents. There was a genttleman who spoke at the meeting I attended who seemed well-versed in academia and would be a leading contender, in my humble opinion

What is "daily character building education segments'?

Do not know all the details, but I heard things such as manners, etiquette, etc...

What type of community service will be mandated?

not sure; heard things about giving back to the community, etc... Other public schools have similar requirements

Will there be prayer?

The state defines a charter school as A charter school means a public, nonreligious, non homebased, nonprofit corporation forming a school that operates within a public school district or the SC Public Charter School District, but is accountable to the school board of trustees of that district which grants its charter."
. Notice, first it is a public school, second it is a non-religious school; I've asked the question and been told no

Will creationism be taught?

I do not believe that creationism is accepted curriculum in SC public schools. Interestingly enough, we have friends with kids in private, Christian schools and evolution is taught there along side Creationism, but in public schools, it can't be mentioned? But I digress.

What is your justification for taking public funds away from the public schools?

A Charter School is a public school - so it is not taking money away from public schools.

Again, I don't profess to know everything. I've done a lot of research on Charter Schools and I know there are falures as well as successes.

I understand your concern and as a taxpayer, you have a right to question. Sorry I don't know more answers. If you're biased against it because of my politics, there are plenty of good old liberals involved in this as well. One thing that has no political affiiliation is our kids education.

Again, I'd encourage you to inquire further and report back here. I'd like to hear what you find out.

thanks for the timely reply

I had the same problem with the recent comments area last night and I agree, made it hard to keep up with things.

I plan on contacting the "headmaster" and finding out as much as I can. I am reserving judgement...however a child gets an education is fine with me. If, however, religion is being taught, then it should be done so at a private school and not with public money.

You have stated that this is a "public" school. I hope so. I am still not sure I see the "need" for it.

Thanks again.

No problems

First of all, I appreciate your interest and for keeping an open mind.

I'm speaking for me, but I would not want a public school teaching my child religion - that's why we go to Church. That's why we sit around the dinner table and talk about God and our beliefs.

See if this link helps you with the "public school" part - it's the section of the SC Code of Laws dealing with Charter Schools.

I look forward to any updates you get.
