First of all, let me state at the beginning of this post that no disrespect is intended for the memory of DeAndre Adams, his family, his fans (of which I was one) or the Winthrop Basketball program. I found DeAndre's love and enthusiasm for the game refreshing and he is sorely missed.
That being said, can we dispense with the tribute at every game? I thought the tribute at the first game was appropriate. I believe creating a scholarship in his honor is appropriate.
Maybe it's the timing that bothers me so much. The visiting team is introduced and then there's the pause, waiting on someone to hit "play". Then, the video begins. Once it's done, then we can finally introduce the Winthrop players and start the game. By then, the opposing team has already huddled up and there is none of the traditional hand-shaking, "good luck" sentiments to be shared.
That is part of the sportsmanship of the game that DeAndre epitomized. Maybe the video should be played earlier - five minutes before the start of the game or during halftime. My feeling is that there are enough reminders to keep his memory going for some time.
Again, no disrepect intended - quite the opposite.
