Wednesday morning: WR the new DT

After last week's run on DT injuries, the new thin spot is at receiver.

Both Steve Smith (ankle) and D.J. Hackett (toe) were hauled off the field, with what John Fox deemed minor problems.

They were already down a few, with Muhsin Muhammad (old) and Ryne Robinson (knee) out.

The good news is they're relatively deep there, but it's getting close.

SLB Na'il Diggs also got the veteran morning off. Still looks like he's got an edge over Landon Johnson for a starting job, and that Johnson's a Chris Draft/fourth man type more than anything else.

CB Ken Lucas wasn't out there, meaning he's probably getting his nose set, and MLB Jon Beason and SS Chris Harris also stayed inside.

Umm...

So isn't Chris Draft a better player than the Nail? And should we be paying a 4th LB $3+ mil a year?

And also, what do you think about Favre to the Buccaneers? Their offense doesn't scare me, with or without him. When Ernest Graham, Joey Galloway, and Michael Clayton are your top playmakers, I'm just not going to get concerned.

Agreed

Yea, I was confused about why we would go out and sign Johnson, right after giving 'Nail' an extension. We had other needs in FA and we chose that move which didn't make sense. Then to top it off we picked up Dan Connor in the draft, to add to an already solidified position. Again, it's the whole "Best Player Available" thing that kills me. I wish it was the "Best Player Available -- at a Position of Need"... But as it is, we have expensive back up players, who will eventually get cut a year or two down the road to make room for a talented Connor. Unfortunately, we'll have to eat the cap hits.

That, or...

Connor never gets his shot ahead of said well-paid vets and leaves the team to do better somewhere else. Neither is a great option.

Can't Hurt

Can't hurt, to get hurt. As long as their injuries are minor. The preseason is not just about getting those starters in shape and ready for the season. It's also about evaluating young talent. With Smith and DJ out, Jarrett and Carter will get more time with the 1st team. I for one, would really like to see which between the two of them is ready to be that 4th and final spot. I don't want it to go to Jarrett by default, if Carter is the better and more prepared player.

And that goes for all the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th string players. It never hurts to see what you got with these guys, while playing with starters. Never know when there's a diamond in the rough out there.
