Snobs Blame the Poor Again

In a truly incredible display of snobbery after I wrote that Lake Wylie access stinks for the non-rich, one commenter wrote that if the riff-raff like me want to use Lake Wylie, we should buy a boat. That person claims "No more taxes," while likely counting up the saving from his property tax cut enacted last year.

No, you should move out of the way so regular people who work hard, and pay taxes, and want the same access you rich people enjoy so much, can jump in the lake from the shore and splash. Preferably loudly, while loud music plays from an old boom box, wearing old cutoffs instead of a ritzy bathing suit, while jeering at you khaki-shorts clad Yuppies in kayaks wearing sandals who drink yogurt from drink helmets instead of twin cans of Miller High Life.

A guy named J.B. wrote in to wonder why there are so few swimming options for the people of western York County. Answer: to politicians, and apparently those with boats, you don't matter, that's why.

Rare defense of County Council

After all, I'm the one that wants to recall the whole council and vote new ones in.

HOWEVER....

when exactly did it become government's responsibility to ensure that we had a good swimming hole? We have a county park in Ebenezer Park with access to the lake. Need I remind everyone that we're still in a drought? Perhaps the swimming area would be a little deeper as would the rest of the lake if there were more water - where are those melted ice-caps?

You want the county to dredge the swimming area? How you going to pay for that?

The Dysman has an everyday man's way of putting issues and it sounds good, but let's be practical.

How is this issue exactly keeping us from reaching our potential? Would nicer parks bring in more people? Well, then we'd have to raise taxes again to pay for all the infrastructure. Not to mention listening to people complaining about the growth.

Would nicer parks improve our standard of living? I'm more worried about providing safe and quality education.

And the whole thing bodes of class warfare. Probably all those rich, white Republican old men keeping Dys from bringing his Pabst out to the lake and having fun. Never mind that they pay a very high premium to have their access to the lake.

Just for the record, I'm just doing what I can to get by every day, so I don't have any more access to the lake than anyone else. My thing is, I don't sit around and bitch about waiting for government to do something for me.

Good thing you are not up for election

You would do very poorly in the campaign contribution department.

Telling the truth is worth it though. Thanks!

Who needs to wash off after wading

A classic comment came in over the weekend from a reader who like me is incensed at the apalling lack of public swimming at Lake Wylie:

"I enjoyed your article about Ebenezer Park and the lack of public swimming areas in York County.  I thought I would also point out that none of the showers near the swimming area work... also the deepest part of the swimming area is approx 3' deep... this park could
have so much potential if it was kept up like it should be..."

How can York County reach its potential when the politicians could care less about riffraff like me and 200,000 other people who don't own boats? They want us to swim in mud puddles. They have no shame.
