Editor's Note: The Herald's Gary McCann and Andrew Dys are on their way, via rented car, to Denver to cover Winthrop's first round NCAA Tournament game against Washington State. Like last year's trip to Spokane, Wash., Andrew will be detailing the trip through this blog
JUST OUTSIDE KNOXVILLE, Tenn., 11 a.m. -- We just passed a billboard for Pigeon Forge Radio (Motto: "Comedy, info, free stuff"), but we can’t get a signal.
Early this morning, we stopped at the same Pilot gas station we stopped at last year. Mary Beth Foster, the same lady who was working there last year, was working again and she remembered us. “Is there another basketball game?" she asked. When we told her it was in Denver, she said, "Oh, that's nothing."
Larry the maintenance guy remembered us too. No one seems to know Larry's last name, though. "I didn’t even know he had a last name," one employee offered.
At Enola, N.C., we decided to stop for coffee at the Cupboard, except they spelled it Cubbard. Unfortunatley, they were klosed. They had been closed so long they had signs saying gas was $2.79 a gallon.
We've gone 260 miles so far.
