Race week and religion: A match made in heaven?

The smell won't be incense Sunday, but burnt rubber. Leave that coat and tie in the closet. Grab your Dale Jr. T-shirt, and practice your "whoooeeeee!"

FBC All-Star Sunday

No, beer and tobacco products do not belong on the walls of a Baptist church - or for that matter, any House of Worship.

But that last time I checked, NASCAR is all about the sponsors. And at first thought, I can only think of a few alcohol/tobacco NASCAR sponsors -- but I can name you a list of a couple dozen other sponsors (home improvement warehouses, insurance companies, communications companies, et al).

Also, NASCAR isn't all about the booze and smokes. Come Sunday morning, you won't find any of that at FBC; you'll find a genuine pastor who has a passion for sharing the Gospel with to others in a new and intuitive way. You'll also find a welcoming body of believers; many of whom (such as myself) have been on the other side of the "track" and know what it's like to enter a church full of strangers.

Do this Sunday's festivities fit in line with the "traditional" Baptist "way?" No. Does it fit in to the mission of a Baptist church? Yes!

People change. God's Word does not. But the method that is used to share the Word must change with the times and the people.

And that's exactly what First Baptist is trying to do.
