Panthers sign DT Walker

The Panthers struck quickly to fill their hole on the defensive line, signing veteran Darwin Walker to a one-year deal Monday morning.

His agent, Al Irby, said the Panthers "were on the phone with us all weekend."

The 30-year-old Walker lends immediate credibility to the line, which was questionable after starters Damione Lewis and Maake Kemoeatu.

Terms were undisclosed, but there were at least two other teams talking to Walker, who elected to come here to stay near his South Carolina roots.

Whew.

Was feeling like we were going to some 2-5/3-5 zone blitz package as a standard rotation after the addition of Conner. After looking him up, he really is a steal. Diggs was already serviceable, Johnson was a fantastic add, and Beason and Davis are prime.

Walker's a guy with some solid experience. That's a good add. We might not win every game, but we sure will pound the stuffing out of most teams we play with our new offense.

One thing not mentioned so much is that DeAngelo Williams should pile up a ton of yards in every 4th quarter running against a bunch of winded defenders. What a great 1-2 punch.

Also with Stewart wounding cornerbacks and safeties, sets up Smitty to kill them with speed. I like that.

Wait what about

The best Linebacker on the team Jon Beason?

I was just talking about blitzing specifically

Beason probably won't blitz as much as the two outside guys b/c he'll be in the middle. MLB dont blitz as much as OLB's. But in a 3-4 Beason and Connor in the middle with Thomas Davis and Landon Johnson On the Outside sounds really really good. Team that with Maake on 1&2 downs to stop the run and Lewis on 3rd to push the pocket.. Peppers on one end and charles johnson or brayton at the other.

That defense would be sick.

I didnt leave beason out and believe I didn't forget about him b/c you're right he is the best LB on the team. That D could at least rival The chargers for athleticism in the front 7 I think.

Now with Walker and Conner

We would have a great passing down package. Walker has quite a few sacks (28.5 since '01 for an interior lineman, that's 8 more than Kris Jenkins) and having 4 capable/speedy linebackers should give QBs fits. Drew Brees or Jeff Garcia won't feel too safe if they can be knifed from anywhere with a fast LB. The Conner pick-up really seemed strange, but also looks like an excellent value long term.

Another good thing is it seems Walker really WANTS to be here as opposed to the always fickle/quirky Jenkins.

Don't want to bathe too much in pre-season euphoria, but it seems like the Panthers made some good moves here. If the offense can produce to it's promise, this will be a fun team.

I agree

This finally gives them a solid (not spectacular) D-Line. What are your thoughts about mixing in some 3-4 looks this year. Some of our OLB's (Shaw, Johnson)played some DE in college. Put Connor and beason in the Middle and Thomas Davis on the strong side (where he is a good blitzer). Brayton can play the weakside DE in a 3-4 like a Richard Seymour (believe me I know he is not at all Richard Seymour) Just saying he is a bigger DE that can play 2 gaps. I don't think they should do it all the time but I can see that being a good pass rush look.

Imagine peppers, lewis, brayton, Tim Shaw (rans in teh 4.4's) and or Landon Johnson and or Thomas Davis chasing the QB.

Just an Idea

Sorry for the long post.

Another note...

Our 6th-round DT was talked about as a 3-4 DE, as could likely D. Lewis. One of the reasons we paid Kemo, though, was that he wasn't very good as an NT in the 3-4.

yeah

They run some wierd defenses in Baltimore which probably helped hide some of Kemo's flaws. I think he has to be a 4-3 to have some help in the middle of the defense, but I think he could do it sometimes just to show a different look to catch an offense off guard. I think we absolutly have pash rushers on this team they just aren't all defensive ends. I am hoping McClover can do something... he started the preseason well and then did some damage to his groin with I think stunted his growth into the position pretty severly... I am looking forward to seeing him completely healthy.

Good news!

Glad he finally agreed to a one-year deal, and I'm much happier with his youth than had we picked up Jackson or Coleman (though Larry Tripplett was my guy cost notwithstanding.) I think we could go into the season happy with the 4-man group of Lewis, Kemo, Walker, and Hayden in the rotation at DT, particularly given that Brayton can move inside if he needs to on a game-to-game or situational basis.
