Panthers sign big ol' guard

The Panthers signed G Toniu Fonoti on Tuesday, giving them another big option in the middle of the line.

Fonoti has barely played the last two years and was out of the league in 2007 after being cut by Atlanta. He had largely outgrown the NFL, but is reported in much better shape now.

At this point, Fonoti is competing for a backup job behind Travelle Wharton and Keydrick Vincent.

With a surplus of Gs, maybe

With a surplus of Gs, maybe Wharton remains at LT. Lots of teams need tackles, most of them are in front or near the 13th pick. Maybe panthers go DE first round.

That could be possible...

as a fallback option but I think (hope?!?) it just helps provide competition at RG. It's not like they've got a lot tied up Vincent or Fonoti.

Okay we are set at Guard

Okay we are set at Guard let's get some tackles, either side of the ball. The Tackle from Boise St. had a low Wonderlic score, will NFL teams care? I think I read it was a 15. Most of the tackles were 26+.

Strategy?

It seems like the Panthers are now in the mode of getting low-value linemen and seeing who will shine or wash out during training camp. None of the linemen I can see have been big splashes. This latest signing really seems to position the Panthers with yet another back up, saving the big OL splash for the draft, or keeping Sims from Oakland still on the radar - maybe both. Looks like there may be a "downhill runner" or two later in the draft (Tashard Choice, G-Tech for example) or even a convertible fullback (Jerome Felton, Furman e.g.) around round 4 or later. Also, safety seems to be figured out with Terrence Holt and the "rest of the gang" we have. So we look like picking OL or DL very firm now in the first two rounds, after picking up Holt, and that most of our FA-OLs have been back-up quality...

Cool

A big guy with something to prove. I like it. Any idea or update on where we are with the cap?

Hmm...

Probably not much here at all, but the word last year was that Fonoti had looked good in the offseason workouts before camp. He's still young...maybe we find something?
