OTA Day 10, Looking at the back seven

-- We finally got a look at LB Landon Johnson with the starters, since veteran Na'il Diggs was on the side taking what appeared to be a veteran soreness day.

Watching Johnson's progress is going to be interesting. The draw with him is easy to see: He's smart, fast and versatile. But the flip side is a bad Cincinnati defense was willing to let him walk after he led the Bengals in tackles three of the last four years.

Hard to tell what his role here's going to be if he doesn't best Diggs out for the starting WLB job. It's also hard to know if he's closer to Chris Draft, or Will Witherspoon.

-- The Panthers feel pretty good about their corners, provided everyone stays healthy. Put it this way, the second nickel package consists of CBs Dante Wesley, Ricardo Colclough and C.J. Wilson, none of whom would inspire great confidence if thrust into a bigger role. Wesley's a core special teamer who was missed last year, and Colclough might return kicks, so that's going to be a factor when it's time to make cuts.

Problem is, there doesn't appear to be that Jarrett Bush-level kid who's going to make it hard to cut him this year. That makes me think it's going to be one of the position they keep a close eye on when cuts start coming down.

Nate Salley?

Is Nate Salley just Chris Harris's back-up with little ability to cover/play free-safety? Prior to Minter's retirement and Salley's injury, Salley was last year's designated starter. What's up?
