Mock You Like Hurricane, v. 4.0

Here it is, the final mock before draft day. We've done it for a month now, and keep fiddling with each of them.
This one, however, is closer to how I think it could actually come down.

13 - T Ryan Clady, Boise State
43 - DE Lawrence Jackson, USC
67 - RB Kevin Smith, Central Florida
74 - WR Dexter Jackson, Appalachian State
109 - DT DeMario Pressley, N.C. State
141 - DT Marcus Harrison, Arkansas
181 - CB Orlando Scandrick, Boise State
221 - QB Dennis Dixon, Oregon
241 - T Tyler Polumbus, Colorado
250 - TE Joseph Tuineau, SE Missouri State

I think somehow, some way, they end up with Clady, even if it means moving up a few spots. Beyond that, they fill in with pass rush and a sleeper running back. Jackson’s not just a homer pick. He has some advocates in that building, who love his potential as a slot receiver.
In the later rounds, look for them to load up on DT prospects. Scandrick’s a sleeper with speed (4.32 40). While there’s been a lot of chatter about QBs, they’ve been quietly checking out Dixon, an unquestioned athlete coming off a knee injury. I’m privately rooting for Tuineau, because he’s 6-8, 277 pounds and from New Zealand. He’d give them the giant blocker they’ve been looking for going back to their multiple attempts to get Brandon Manumaleuna.

Going to be an interesting weekend folks. Tune in here for the latest throughout.

Wow, I actually picked a few

Wow, I actually picked a few of the same people you did with my draft yesterday. I am happy to see that you included Orlando Scandrick, as I think that of all the people (outside of a first rounder), he is the most likely to be drafted by Carolina. He is the type of player that that team loves. Great special teamer, and can contribute on defense.

D' OH Jackson

Where to begin........Darin you must know the Panthers current WR/PR/KR situation. Panthers usually carry five WRs and they should be Smith, Moose, Ryne Robinson, Dwayne Jarrett and DJ Hackett. All are near locks to make the 53 roster. THEN you have Travis Taylor(former top ten pick, still in his 20s) and Jason Carter(practice squad playmaker)

Next is KR/PR and the list gos on- Ryne Robinson, Smith, Nick Goings, Deangelo Williams, Tofield, Alex Haynes, Richard Marshall, Ricardo Colclough, and Geoff Hangman.......

Where/How does Jackson fit?

Simple

He takes Robinson's spot as a returner and receiver. Granted, I don't believe we draft him nor do I believe we should, but I think he could take Robinson's spot.

Michaelprocton's picture

Absolutely not...

Robinson was a better, more productive player (as both a WR and kick returner) at a higher level of competition. 3 900+-yard receiving seasons, and 2 at 1100+. Jackson barely had 1100 yards in a 40-game CAREER.

And

He was a better, more productive player at a higher level than Jerry Rice. Turns out that Rice guy was pretty good, but he played at a lower level. Doesn't mean Robinson can't be replaced. Not really comparing any of the 3, but it was obvious the team wasn't happy with Robinson last year. I don't think we should replace him yet, he's got a year in the system now and will hopefully blossom. The point is, it's possible the team would look at Jackson. You make it sound like Robinson is an All-Pro and there's no way they would look to replace him.

Michaelprocton's picture

The team really showed how unhappy they were with Robinson...

by allowing him to return kicks and punts enough to rank in the top ten single-season all time in both categories. Oh, and all the return help they got in this year's draft. The problem the last few years has been the blocking, not the returner.

Mock 4

I really don't have many objections, but I think one pick has to be used, either as a pick or traded, for a safety. I'd love to see Holt and/or Salley be effective, but I'm not convinced either will be what the Panthers need.

BH's picture

First pick sets up all the others...

... so I can't think too much of specific names beyond first round. Y'all seem to have the edge on me!

Just some of my thoughts: (all IMO, as usual)

DE Harvey: this pick seems quite possible, although it would neither excite or annoy me. Yawn.

Clady vs. Albert: First off, Clady is probably more likely than Albert to be gone at #13, but it's possible that neither will be around for us. I agree with bb_matthews2002 on Albert. If F&H believe Albert really can play the OT position and not just OG, then he has to have the edge. Also, Clady is said to have "intelligence issues".

Other "1st round" OT's, Williams, Otah, etc.: Yawn. (If no OT in first round, then Gosder Cherilus would be the next round target.)

RB Stewart: I have to think that F&H like him, but only if others players they rate higher for the 13 slot are gone, and especially if they could trade down about 4 places and still get him plus another 2nd or 3rd round pick.

RB D McF and QB Ryan: I'd be shocked if either are the twinkle of F&H's collective eye. All the talk of trading up for either of them is nonsense. (One of the more intriguing aspects of this draft will be what happens, trade-wise, should Ryan not get taken by Atl or KC.)

Michaelprocton's picture

With all of our needs...

I just don't see a WR going in the first four picks. I don't see any way Jackson is a better prospect than Ryne Robinson, who was more productive as both a receiver and returner at a higher level of competition. Jackson would be no better than a #5 WR/KR at best. Also, I just don't think Pressley or Harrison will be availible in the 4th and 5th, respectively.

Dixon would be an interesting pick, but I think he'll eventually end up choosing baseball (he was a pretty high pick of the Braves and played for them last summer) given the state of his knee.

Don't know anything about Tunieau, but your blurb sounds good

Mock 4.

13 - Matt Ryan QB, BC
43 - Brian Brohm, QB, Louisville
67 - Andre Woodson, QB, Kentucky

Ha ha, got you.

Notes: I keep looking at all the freaking guards we got in free agency and Travelle's new money and keep thinking - are we REALLY going after a 1st-round tackle? I guess we might expect some wash-outs. Still, we only have two "official" tackles, Wharton and Gross, and Gross has "the tag" and we like Wharton at guard, and Bridges is good when he's behaving off the field. So...

13 - OT/G Brandon Albert, Virginia
43 - DT Dre Moore, Maryland
67 - RB Matt Forte, Tulane
74 - FS Quinton Demps, UTEP
109 - DT DeMario Pressley, N.C. State
141 - TE Martin Rucker, Missouri (call me sentimental)
181 - FB Jerome Felton, Furman
221 - SS Corey Lynch App St.
241 - OLB Ezra Butler, Nevada
250 - DE Martail Burnett, Utah

Where possible, I picked close to home to fill a few more seats in the stadium. Carolina is a young franchise and doesn't have the rabid fans of a Packers or Eagle fanbase, so adding fans of local college programs is important. I like Albert at 13, because this franchise has a fetish about versatility on the line and Albert is built more like a tackle. I figure DaJuan Morgan is gone by 74, and at 43 we need DT more than FS. With Brayton, Johnson, McClover, and Pep, we got 4 DEs. Kemo and Lewis aren't young guys, so DT is a definite priority over DE. Also, once past Lynch, I picked for speed, special teams, and evident passion for the game.

Unlike my Mock 3, I am assuming no pick-trading, though Sedrick Ellis is an attractive move up, and an additional 2nd rounder is an attractive move downward.

Lynch

I still say Corey Lynch would be great for this team in the 6th or 7th. Solid depth safety with a nose for the football and a great special teams guy. He could be Karl Hankton with talent.

Pardon the length, I got

Pardon the length, I got bored at work. I’m guessing the Panthers will completely ignore the OL because they’re already happy with who they’ve got and have plenty of other holes to fill. What used to be this team’s strength is now arguably its weakest spot – the defensive line. Two or three first-day picks would go a long way to rebuilding it.

1 – Trade up with New England or Baltimore, give up a 3rd rounder and possibly Seward and take DT Sedrick Ellis. If they stay at 13, they’ll probably take Gator DE Derrick Harvey. You can never have enough SEC guys on your team.

2 – If they got Ellis, they continue on the DL and draft Calais Campbell if he’s there, but personally, I’d rather have Quentin Groves. I’ve never seen an end take over games the way he did at Auburn. Part of me wishes Kenny Phillips would fall to us and we could quit worrying about the safety position for 4 or 5 years. If we take an OL anywhere, it’s Sam Baker here—very underrated.

3 – RB Matt Forte. He’s big, fast, a good guy, and they won’t mess with DeAngelo’s confidence by taking a 3rd rounder. If he’s not there or if they didn’t trade up for Ellis, maybe they go with Auburn DT Pat Sims or S Dajaun Morgan if they didn’t get Phillips.

4 – QB - Andre Woodson – Kentucky. Ever since Mike Martz screwed him up at the Senior Bowl, his stock has been falling for no real reason. For a guy many thought would be a first-round pick when everybody still had pads on, that’s a steal. He’s got the intangibles, which I think Fox values in a QB more than measurables, and a laser-rocket arm. I could also see them getting RB Kevin Smith if they missed on Forte.

5 – For the love of all that is holy, this team needs to draft TE Martin Rucker. More than any other player in this draft, I will be upset if we don’t get him, which is hard to say about a fifth-rounder, but we need as much Rucker DNA on this team as we can get. If he’s gone, I could see them going for DT Letroy Guion or S Quinton Demps – great value picks.

6 –FB Jacob Hester out of LSU is a perfect protégé for Hoover. That guy is just a beast. If he’s gone, maybe FB Jerome Felton out of Furman – gotta love the Paladins. Also, if he’s managed to fall this far, I’d love to get CB Jack Ikegwuonu and stash him on IR for a year so he can move up if Gamble leaves via free agency.

7 – Three picks here, and if they haven’t taken Phillips or Demps, they go FS Jonathan Hefney from UT, SS Corey Lynch and decide to throw the OL a bone and take OT Kirk Barton from that really pretentious team from Ohio.

Andre Woodson

This guy will be a huge steal. I still like him better than any QB not named Matt Ryan and Ryan is not that far ahead.

Just add another DT and this would be my dream draft.
