Looking for a few good windmills?

If you're up for a joust, this might be for you.

Was sent an e-mail from a Panthers fan alerting me to an on-line petition
(Link here).

These folks are hoping to spur Panthers owner Jerry Richardson to change the mid-field logo at Bank of America Stadium. They're looking for a big Panther head. He prefers the NFL logo, known familiarly to league employees as "the shield."

People have been barking about this for years. If it moves you, there's the link to the petition. Who knows, maybe somebody sees it and it changes a mind.

The only problem is, there's only one mind that counts here, and it ain't changing.

Quick story: Once upon a time, there was a meeting involving some of the stadium operation folks, the grounds crew, Richardson's son Jon (who runs the building) and the boss man himself. A plan was presented to paint the Panthers logo at mid-field. A good bit of time had been spent on the renderings. Discussions were held, drawings were shown, including contingencies as to where to move the league's logo.

The elder Richardson took it all in, listened and looked respectfully. Then he rose, and adjourned the meeting by saying simply: "Boys, ... paint the shield."

There might have been an extra word just before "shield," but I wasn't there to hear it myself, and I couldn't type it here anyway.

Good luck, though.

WOW!!!

That's ALMOST 2% of the BOA's capacity!!! And just imagine how many of those are real signatures! I'm sure the logo will be on the field tomorrow!

Perfect solution

Here's the perfect solution and it benefits everyone:

Put the Panthers logo on the 50 yard line. Then put the NFL Shield on the 25 yard lines. The fans are happy and Jerry can thank the NFL twice.

Everyone wins. :)

1000 signatures with 400 fake

Don't see this thing being taken seriously. Read the names of the people that signed it.

So help it!

So go out there and get 400 "real" people to sign it.

Its up to us fans to make this work. We have to get loud about the things we see important.

I did read the names anf there looks to be ALOT of people who believe in this.

there is over 1000 names now and the BS names have been deleted it looks like.

PAINT THE LOGO JR

Not everyone gets Darrin's

Not everyone gets Darrin's allusion to Don Qiuxote (Cervantes, if my memory serves me--surprised an ASU grad is familiar with it). In the classic, Quixote is a dillusional mock hero who attacks windmills in one scene in a hopeless and pointless battle. The beauty if this is, if you fight the windmill and WIN, you have toiled for a 200 square foot patch of painted grass.

Oh I got the headline.

Oh I got the headline. Darin's been on a roll for a while now with those. "Mock you like a hurricane" was my personal favorite, but the windmill line is worthy of a golf clap as well.

Fonoti

This was posted on Charlotte.com and then again by catscratchreader.com, but I couldn't help share it. Fonoti looks like he is in excellent shape. If he still has this athleticism and can regain his form, he could be an absolute STEAL in FA.

Alternative logo idea

I once heard someone suggest that the logo be changed to one similar to UNC's basketball court logo. They have the state of North Carolina @ mid-court and I think the idea of having both North and South Carolina @ mid-field in BofA would make for a very cool, yet, LARGE logo. Speaking of BofA, congrats on the new scoreboard. Now if we could just get some Ric Flairisms blasted over the PA system.

Not that I know of

I think Carolina's alone in that area. I read on Panthers.com this off season that the reason JR has the shield on the field is simply because he feels that the NFL brand label is the most powerful brand on the planet period.

Does anyone else remember that article?

What's the benefit or rationale for the shield vs team logo?

What's gained with the shield - is it monetary, political, or both?

I signed the petition but it

I signed the petition but it isn't that big deal to me. How about a compromise and put 2 smaller sized ones on the 40's on opposite side

Love the Panthers then come on over to

Paint the logo

JR has said thank you to the NFL LONG enough.

enough is enough- how about sayin thank you to the FANS!!

Paint the Panther Logo!

I signed the petition.

The Carolina Panthers are a wonderful franchise. But they're not a great franchise yet. Some of that takes decades of fan base, generations of fans. Heroes. Memories. Legends. Mr. Richardson experienced this when he caught passes from John Unitas and played along side of Ray Berry and Art Donovan. Sam Mills, Mike Minter, Jake Delhomme, and others have made a great start at creating a culture, and years from now, hopefully a legend. All the efforts of the franchise in the last 10+ years have been truly energetic and wonderful.

But a franchise needs something else. It needs an identity and a culture. I know it's just a cat's head to some, but painting the logo at midfield is a symbol. It's a symbol that says "This is OUR HOUSE". Whether it's because he's being the southern gentleman and bowing to the corporate NFL, or just wants to maintain a non-threatening, non-"homer" image, Mr. Richardson is wrong.

We, the fans own this franchise with our spirit and our wallets. We support it with our time, money, and energy. The 99.9% of us don't make what Mr. Richardson makes, we don't live it as a business. That's for him to bear and prosper from. We support the team, go to the games, buy the $100 tickets and the $6 hot dogs with our spare time and money. Because we LOVE THE GAME.

I think the least he could do is consider putting the team's identity on the field so players and fans alike could best enjoy the pride of "OUR HOUSE" like every other NFL team.

Who knows, a little more home pride could add one more 'W' or two to the schedule each season. It sure couldn't hurt.

bb_matthews2002's picture

Wow. I was really pontificating here.

But I still think we need a team-specific logo. I don't think our brand identification should be the generic NFL. BOA stadium is a class-act, but a Panther-specific logo would add some real pride, and give more of a traditional team feel.

I agree with you, but

If memory serves, we are not the only team in the league with the shield at the 50. I'm fairly certain the Jets and the Giants have the shield at the 50 of the Meadowlands, but that's not exactly the same situation since they share a stadium. Can anyone else think of any other teams with the shield at the 50?
