Jarrett pleads guilty

CHARLOTTE -- Carolina Panthers wide receiver Dwyane Jarrett pleaded guilty on Monday to a charge of driving while impaired.

Jarrett was arrested in March after recording a blood alcohol level of 0.12.

On Monday, Jarrett was given a 30-day suspended sentence, ordered to pay $420 in fines and complete 24 hours of community service.

After the verdict, Jarrett said he was “happy to get this over with and learn from my mistakes.”

Let us all hold hands...

And hope this is the last off-field incident/event for this year. Pray for no DUIs, spouse abuse, gun wavings, disturbance of the peace, mouthing off to police, jaywalking, violations of homeowners covenants, etc etc.

Raising my glass, hoping for a football-focused year!

(I suppose hoping for a moratorium of ill-advised team member comments to the local media would be a bit too much. :) )

Is there any word out of Panthers camp...

about expected punishment? I wouldn't expect the league to step in for a first time offense, but a game check or two (or maybe even a game suspension) from the Panthers wouldn't suprise me.

It would be a league thing if anything, ...

They might fine him half a game check, but I doubt he'd be missing time.

Of course, if he's not active for the first game, I also doubt it has anything to do with a suspension.

No suspension

I think that the CBA allows one freebie DUI.

Now that's interesting.

Here's why:
1. They "punish" him. (He's already lost his license, been "fined", on probation, and increased NFL testing). But really Moose, Hackett, Robinson, Carter, and others are vying for his slot.

2. With Jarrett out of the line up a couple games, it provides an opportunity for checking out another guy, like Robinson or Carter, and they either fail or cement an active spot all while Jarrett is being "punished", or Jarrett comes in after being out a couple games (meaning it's a convenient opportunity).

I just think a guy who was "projected" in the first round has learned alot of humility over the past year, and that is a good sign. I was impressed with his comments about Steve Smith. Also, it goes to show that one passionate off-hand comment in front of the media (the Smitty comment last year), has taken on a life of it's own, in that it is still newspaper material nearly a year later. Whew!

maturity and contrition

I agree that his comments sounded mature and contrite. I hope this is a sign of better things to come from Jarrett.

well said BH

I met him last year with my sons. He was very nice and humble to them and responded to me, "yes sir,no sir" I was impressed with the young man, who looked like a kid 2-3 years out of high school. I have faith that he is not some NJ thug but a kid who had no idea what he was getting into. He is under the wings of SS and MM, a couple of leaders who lost their ways early on but rebounded nicely.
(I know SS is hard on him, but he will be the first to praise Jarrett when its time.)
