Hartwig's gone

The Panthers released C Justin Hartwig Tuesday, clearing the way for Ryan Kalil to take over in the middle.

The initial thought was to let Hartwig compete for a guard job, but he was never crazy about the idea of moving. So they cut him, and now they'll have a competition for the right guard spot. Figure Keydrick Vincent has the inside track, but Geoff Hangartner has a shot as well.

Seems like a REALLY dumb move...

They just cost themselves close to a million dollars to cut a guy who has all the tools to be a productive starter...makes no sense at all to me.

Maybe not so Dumb

The Panthers know a whole lot more about the guys on the roster than us fans. There has to be more to it than just wanting to get Kalil in the starting role. Hartwig hasn't been the same since the groin injury that put him on the IR. I don't think he has earned his pay since they signed him. The truth will probably come out later.

And the truth is...

That he's worth almost a MILLION DOLLARS in salary cap space more to be off the roster than on it? I doubt it. Strongly.

Bye-Bye to another busted injury plagued contract.

Hartwig just never got hot.

Shame. He had so much promise when they got him. Between salary cap and his desire to just play center, seems like it was the best move. Hail Kalil!

Competition!

Thats what has been missing with the Panther's OL forever! Don't just make it for the right guard make it both guards and center. Let the best player have the starting jobs. Forget about what round they were drafted in let them earn the job.

Uhh...

Hartwig was drafted in the 6th round.
