Chester County sheriff's race heating up

The race for Chester County sheriff should be an interesting rematch of the 2004 election.

Fort Lawn Police Chief Richard Smith is expected to announce his candidacy for the county’s top law enforcement post within days. Smith challenged incumbent Robby Benson for the seat in 2004.

Former Sheriff John Wayne Holcombe and retired Chester Police Chief Aaron Madden also ran for the post that year.

Smith and Benson have sparred in the past, including a public disagreement in 2006 about how authorities should police drugs in the county. In December of that year, Smith filed a police report against Benson, accusing the sheriff of harassing him.

No charges were filed in that case.

Talk of Smith running for sheriff has been buzzing around the county for more than a year. The two men will likely face off at the Democratic primary in June.

Sheriff Smith... sounds good!

Richard Smith has my full support (and check) for Chester County Sheriff. His local dedication and community involvement is well respected and appreciated throughout Chester County.

Let's face it. Smith has

Let's face it. Smith has been running for Sheriff ever since he got bounced to Fort Lawn. Where's the pop corn? This will be good.

You're right

When I asked him why he's running, Smith said he came to Fort Lawn because he wanted to be the sheriff. In case you're interested, here's his campaign Web site:
www.electrichardsmith.com. This should be an interesting race: An incumbent in his second term against a small-town police chief who is popular with county officials. Definitely one to watch.
