"The Electric Company," Version 2.0

“HEY YOU GUUUUUUYYYS!"

PBS is apparently making a new version of the classic 1970s show “The Electric Company.”

I was always more of a “Sesame Street” kid, but I remember hearing good things about the show from friends. Also, I know it was the inspiration for Sloth’s famous “HEY YOU GUUUUUUYYYS!” catchphrase in “The Goonies.”

Anyway, here’s a snippet from The Associated Press about the new show:

Budgets are not fun

Last night the Rock Hill school board took its first stab at budget discussions. There isn't a line-by-line budget yet, but it looks like it will be about $130 million. That will leave the school district with at least a $4 million shortfall of money coming in to overcome.

Here are some highlights of the discussion:
• Rock Hill, unlike Fort Mill, is not planning to look at taking away bonuses for National Board Certified teachers

Let's just tap into the BBC

Oh, wait, we already do. American TV is becoming British, as ABC proves today with adding "Life on Mars" to its fall lineup.

"Life on Mars" is a highly successful BBC production starring John Simms (he who was the Master in series 3 of "Doctor Who"). This fall, David E. Kelley is bringing an Americanized version of it to ABC. Who's starring? Irish actor Jason O'Mara.

Jason will have across-the-pond company in LA with the likes of British actors Jonny Lee Miller (who plays an American lawyer on ABC's "Eli Stone") and Hugh Laurie (FOX's "House").

Getting ahead of ourselves

When he first said it last month at his charity golf tournament, it was easy enough to Torry Holt to laugh off his desire join the Panthers when his contract with St. Louis expires.

He went there again Sunday, and it's obvious that in his mind, he's coming to Carolina, sometime.
Story.

Cherry Park

On Friday, the city of Rock Hill bestowed a long-due honor to former mayor Betty Jo Rhea by naming the control tower between the softball fields after her. Rhea was instrumental in getting approval for Cherry Park to be built, and I have a personal reason to be thankful it was.

Obama puts the moves on Spratt

Think Barack Obama wants the blessing of Congressman John Spratt? Their chance encounter Thursday on Capitol Hill should give us a pretty good answer.

Bottom line: Spratt remains uncommitted in the superdelegate contest between Obama and Hillary Clinton, his office told The Herald this afternoon. It's unclear when, and if, Spratt will announce which candidate he supports.

The New York Times reported on the Obama/Spratt moment in a story published today. Here's an excerpt:

Make way for the turf

Artificial turf at Rock Hill's District Three Stadium is expected to be on the ground and ready to go by early July, according to the company that's installing it. I recently got an e-mail from Medallion Athletic Products touting the benefits of the product.

The news release says the field will definitely by ready for fall sports. The real grass on the field already has been removed. The plan is to try to reuse it at Sullivan Middle School.

Microsoft's next move

Microsoft's withdrawal of its bid to buy Yahoo has many analysts trying to guess what the company's next move will be.

In a story by the Associated Press technology writer Jessica Mintz, analysts seem to be divided on the course it should take. Some analysts say Microsoft must increase its search traffic to attract advertisers. Others believe Microsoft should concede that market to Google and find success elsewhere — leapfrogging rivals in areas such as display and mobile advertising.

The surprise will be it’s in The Herald. Amber’s mom, Tammy, brought in the paperwork and photo without telling them what she was up to.

COOL WEB SITES: Music, images, voices and more

JOG PLAY (www.jogplay.com)
JogPlay streams music from your home computer to any web browser, it maps your music library to YouTube music videos and it works on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. I have messed around with the site a bit, but not enough to really make a judgment on it. It seems easy to use, but transferring music appears to be slow. Judge for yourself.
