Afternoon update, Saturday

-- The Panthers WR depth this camp is impressive. The guys who get cut are going to play elsewhere, and make plays.

WR Jason Carter, who spent last year on the practice squad, had the play of the weekend with his one-handed leaping catch to end the afternoon session. It drew roars from his teammates, and a life-in-your-own-hands chest bump with T Jeremy Bridges.

Carter's a playmaker, but he's going to have to fight for a job in a crowded field. Put Josh Davis and Chris Hannon in the same group.

As for the likely candidates to win jobs, Dwayne Jarrett has great hands. That's all.

-- Talked to Jordan Gross after the late practice about his move for an upcoming story. When asked how far apart he and the Panthers were on the money in a long-term deal, the franchise-tagged LT shrugged:
"Not terribly, ... it was just more we ran out of time."

I still think something happens before the July 15 deadline for this year, largely because he's their guy, they groomed him, and it's going to be hard to replace him without a first-round pick next year.

-- Also, anyone worried about LG Travelle Wharton shouldn't. He's going to be fine inside. During a one-on-one drill, he stood up DE Stanley McClover with ease, and if it wasn't for Carter's grab, it would have been the awe-inducing play of the day.

-- First fight, when LB Adam Seward and LG Milford Brown went at it. Won't be the last.

Wharton vs. McClover

Wharton stood up McClover with ease? Are you kidding me? If Wharton can do that, you're right, the Panthers are in good shape with him at guard because McClover is going to be a freaking beast.

Ehh...

But it's not like McClover's strength has ever been his ability to stand up at the point of attack. Speed's his game, and I think most decent o-linemen should be able to put him on his back if he tries to overpower them straight on.

More detail on Jarrett, please.

Hi Darin,

When you say:
"As for the likely candidates to win jobs, Dwayne Jarrett has great hands. That's all."

Does this mean -
1. All his other qualities were lacking - or -
2. He caught everything thrown to him, he'll clearly make the team - or -
3. Yes, he has great hands, but the concern is his head.

Obviously, the recent DUI raises some questions.

Who's been worried about Travelle?

I'm sure everybody thinks he should do better at LG than LT, but I still maintain he's the best LT on our roster.

I agree. He gave up 9 sacks

I agree. He gave up 9 sacks last year, but seven were early. He was recovering from his knee surgery. He looked good at the end of the year. If Gross was better at LT, Wharton would have been moved to RG and Bridges to RT. I think we start with the best LT and fill in the rest of the line from there. The strategy is unusual, but I still think we are going to be better.

Curious about the Jarrett

Curious about the Jarrett comment -- are you saying that his only discernible talent is good hands, or was that just the last thing you had to say about all the receivers?

Darin's picture

To clarify

Dwayne's been catching everything. Period. No underlying agenda there, just that. He's looked good.

Jarrett

I can't help but root against Jarrett. A kid with all the opportunities that he had last season, and he wasted it all by partying and slacking. If he doesn't show a complete turnaround in attitude, he should be traded.

Respectfully, Mr. jblues:

1. He didn't get on the field till late in the season.
2. 21 year-old unreasonably-worshiped, excessively-paid young athletes occasionally do dumb things.

Hopefully he understands the seriousness of his situation from the trail of discarded 2nd-rounders that preceded him.

I'm with you, Mr Matthews, however

I agree on both your points, however,

1. Not getting on the field was his own fault for not knowing plays.

2. He's in Charlotte, not L.A., and shouldn't be experiencing any unwarranted athlete-worship here.

I hope he gets the message, too, but there are hungrier players wanting that spot on the roster. I've only seen one player in Panther history turn around a bad attitude - and that's the guy who called him out in front of the press last season.

bb_matthews2002's picture

Agreed.

I hope he turns it around and blossoms. I hope he takes the path of Steve Smith and not Eric Shelton. It does sound like he's had a good training camp, but honestly the competition is tougher this year than it ever has been. USC receivers have not hung around long in Charlotte.

What's notable, is that this 2nd round (he was predicted for the 1st!) talent is currently competing for the 4th(!) receiver spot with Ryne Robinson, who is most definitely motivated.

It will be good to see how he responds with the talent in front of him.
