Connie Spencer arrived last Friday night to Jubilee Children's Center to join Ramona Havas and me for our final week in Kenya! Connie brought many items for the birthday bags (little toys and candy and jewelry) to add to the items that RAmona and I bought on behalf of KOP (Kenya Orphanage Project, which funds Jubilee). We had a great time stuffing the birthday bags! The kids all got new leather shoes from BATA shoe store for their birthdays, too, so they'll look "SMART," their term for looking good/looking nice
KOP also purchased a huge hunk of minced meat from this meat factory in Kenya for some meat and vegetable stew which we put over pasta (a rare treat that KOP also bought). We enjoyed this different meal for lunch and supper on birthday night-last Saturday, June 19. After supper the children all got a cup of ice cream (their first since the last birthday party in June 2007). That night we watched "High School Musical Part 2," which the kids adored! We were all up late watching it..the kids loved that!
Connie brought 3 laptops for the kids to have. She has diligently been setting them up and letting the kids just fiddle around with them. The teachers even like them and love to get on them, too! Connie has begun teaching them all how to type in MIcrosoft Word and save documents in their own folders. She set the computers up in this small unused room in the school part so they'll have access to them daily. The kids LOVE them and are just little sponges in there, soaking up info and also playing the games and working the programs. They are truly loving them. There are some desktop computers that have been sent in a container to add to these that Connie's leaving. The kids REALLY REALLY like the computers! Could use more lessons...maybe the next time Monique Boekhout, director of KOP, does a trip some people will want to come to help with this?
These kids are beautiful and well-cared for. As more orphans are accepted here, more sponsorships are needed. You can contact Monique Boekhout at KOP--contact info is on www.kenyaorphanageproject.com if you'd like to visit the site!
We're going on a day field trip tomorrow to Lake Nukuru. The kids are SO EXCITED!!! They say they will not sleep tonight. They never get to leave the campus so this is a treat....it's a 2 hour bus ride...
Amani (peace in swahili) from Kenya!
