See if this works for youSubmitted by Darin on Wed, 2008-10-08 12:29.I know we've had problems today moving to a new system. For the time being, try this link, which will take you to the new blog. It works for now, but keep checking the front page as we get this thing smoothed out. Yes, that was me saving gasSubmitted by Shannon_Greene on Wed, 2008-10-08 11:17.If you were driving along S.C. 160 in Fort Mill around 7:30 last night, you might have seen me jogging home from Food Lion with a six-pack of Charmin. Embarrassing? Slightly. Economical? You bet. Last night, we had one of those “uh-oh” moments at the house when we realized we were down to the last few squares of toilet paper. I’m usually a bulk shopper and just assumed we had more. We didn’t even have any tissues for backup! So I ran to the store. Literally. I needed a workout anyway after eating extra brownies at work yesterday. Busy WednesdaySubmitted by Darin on Wed, 2008-10-08 10:32.Made a roster move, putting WR Ryne Robinson on IR. Signed WR Kenneth Moore, a former fifth-rounder by Detroit. The Wake Forest and Butler HIgh product will come in and work on returning. Running short on OL in practice, without OTs Jeff Otah and Jordan Gross and C Ryan Kall, along with WR D.J. Hackett, S Quinton Teal and DT Darwin Walker. Didn't last longSubmitted by Darin on Tue, 2008-10-07 17:08.Former Panthers wideout Taye Biddle was waived by the New York Giants Tuesday, making room on the roster for the reinstated Plaxico Burress. He was signed there on Sept. 24 after being waived-injured from Detroit camp this summer. Biddle was a fan favortie here for what he once described as his 4.19 speed. The Panthers didn't work anyone out Tuesday, but a few of their old hands made the off-day tryout rounds. S Terrence Holt and CB Tyrone Poole were part of a DB cattle call in Tennessee, and DT Alvin McKinley worked out for Baltimore. Fox thinks injuries not majorSubmitted by Darin on Mon, 2008-10-06 09:07.Panthers coach John Fox said Monday he didn't think any of the injuries sustained Sunday against the Chiefs were particularly serious. The one of concern's likely WR D.J. Hackett, who went down on the opening kickoff, leaving them with just three for the day. But if they put Dwayne Jarrett in there, I'm not sure they lose all that much. Otherwise, there was much discussion of the nearly perfect effort against KC. A game against a horrible opponent will do wonders for you, as their league rankings showed the impact of the beating. Post-KC odds and endsSubmitted by Darin on Sun, 2008-10-05 17:44.-- Yes, in fact, Jake Delhomme can overthrow Steve Smith. -- No, in fact, Delhomme didn't go to Duke. But it was a nice flop. -- D.J. Hackett may become the next Wally Pipp. Nothing against a hurt guy, but he hasn't done much, and Dwayne Jarrett may make him obsolete, soon. Hackett had no business blocking on the kickoff return team, not because he's to valuable to lose, but because his skill set doesn't qualify him for it. If Hackett misses time (probably) and Jarrett plays well (possibly), it would he hard to justify benching last year's second-rounder again. Biggest of all timeSubmitted by Darin on Sun, 2008-10-05 13:40.If style points counted it would have been worse than 34-0, but as it stands, it was still the biggest win in franchise history. The previous large margin was 33, from the 44-11 whipping of Atlanta to close the 2005 regular season. (Edit: Yep, I screwed that one up earlier, it was one of those days they couldn't stop DeShaun). The biggest home win was a 27-point spread they put on the New York Jets in 2005. That was the day Ken Lucas got in trouble for saying how good it felt to make the Jets quit, even though they did. Smith back, sort ofSubmitted by Darin on Sun, 2008-10-05 11:50.WR Steve Smith came back in for a snap after taking a thunderous shot from Chiefs S Bernard Pollard, in a manner of speaking. He went back out for a run play that never put him in danger of having to block, and then coach John Fox sent Mark Jones to go get him. Now they've got Nick Goings running the ball. This is where they wish they had bigger rosters, so they could clear the field of starters. Free advice for Fox: Take kneesSubmitted by Darin on Sun, 2008-10-05 11:37.They left their starters out there up 31-0, and it might cost them. QB Jake Delhomme just threw a little smoke route to WR Steve Smith, who stiff-armed rookie CB Brandon Carr into oblivion. Then SS Bernard Pollard dropped Smith hard, and it appears he's hurt his shoulder again. No accident that Delhomme came off the field with his little buddy, replaced by Josh McCown. Now it's 34-0 after another field goal. If anyone who's played in a Pro Bowl steps on the field again, there should be a firing. A couple of injuriesSubmitted by Darin on Sun, 2008-10-05 11:15.C Ryan Kalil's been in and out twice in the third quarter. Looks like they're fiddling with his right foot. Judging by the attention he's getting, it's not horribly serious. DE Hilee Taylor left the game with a knee injury, and he won't return. He's still sitting on the bench, however. This is hard to believeSubmitted by Darin on Sun, 2008-10-05 10:34.KC is getting smoked like Arthur Bryant's barbecue. Really, this is bordering on ridiculous. RB DeAngelo Williams has three touchdowns (note to those who seem eager to give his job away), the Panthers defense had kept the Chiefs in negative yards most of the half. Haven't seen any more of D.J. Hackett, and I doubt we will. Frankly, I wouldn't play Delhomme much more either. Seriously, the Panthers have outgained the Chiefs 291-28 in the first half. Outrushed them 123-3. They've converted 7-of-9 third downs. Rhys Lloyd put a kickoff in the seats (with a 15-yard penalty head start). Hackett hurtSubmitted by Darin on Sun, 2008-10-05 09:33.WR D.J. Hackett's hurt. Left with a knee injury following the opening kickoff. With S Quinton Teal down today, Hackett was playing special teams. He's questionable to return. Without him, the third receiver is PR Mark Jones. As much time as they've spent in two-TE sets the last month, not sure how much it matters. Inactives for KCSubmitted by Darin on Sun, 2008-10-05 07:42.As expected, the Panthers deactivated both starting tackles, with LT Jordan Gross and RT Jeff Otah in street clothes for this one. And even though there’s no official declaration, they’re expected to go with Frank Omiyale to make his first NFL start (and take his first career snap of offense) to replace Gross. Jeremy Bridges will start for Otah. Also inactive this week are: QB Matt Moore, WRs Ryne Robinson and Dwayne Jarrett, DT Gary Gibson, LB James Anderson and S Quinton Teal. Peppers fined 10kSubmitted by Darin on Fri, 2008-10-03 13:26.The league decided to back embattled referee Ed Hochuli, fining Panthers DE Julius Peppers $10,000 for last week's helmet-to-helmet hit on Atlanta QB Matt Ryan. Many here, including Peppers himself, questioned the validity of the call, but the league's fine is an implicit vote of confidence for a ref who's been under the microscope all year. Backup DT Darwin Walker was also fined $7,500 for a major facemask. Gross outSubmitted by Darin on Fri, 2008-10-03 08:15.Panthers LT Jordan Gross (concussion) was listed as out for Sunday’s game against Kansas City. That’s no surprise since he was out cold a week ago against Atlanta. RT Jeff Otah (ankle) is listed as doubtful for the game, though he hasn’t practiced all week either. That leaves them extremely thin on the line since they only have nine blockers on the entire roster and keep seven active on game day. Panthers ReportSubmitted by Darin on Thu, 2008-10-02 10:17.The week 5 edition of the Panthers Report can be heard here. Gross not ready to concedeSubmitted by Darin on Thu, 2008-10-02 10:17.Panthers LT Jordan Gross said he's not ready to concede the fact he might not play this weekend because of his concussion. Gross said he's going to try to jog Friday, which would be the first step back. He said that jogging's followed by lifting weights, and then playing would be next. He's still not likely to go against KC, but he's holding out the hope. Asked about last weeks blow to the back of the head, just behind his left ear, Gross said: "I thought it was a few seconds, when it was actually three or four minutes." Thursday update: Diggs sickSubmitted by Darin on Thu, 2008-10-02 09:29.Not much changed on the injury report, although SLB Na'il Diggs was out with an illness. CB Ken Lucas returned to practice on a limited basis, and WR Ryne Robinson was also listed as limited, after being full-go Wednesday. Otherwise, OTs Jordan Gross and Jeff Otah, S Quinton Teal and QB Matt Moore remain out. Oct. 5 - Preserving memoriesSubmitted by BetteC on Thu, 2008-10-02 08:58. The Herald Traditions BlogI treasure my old photo albums. It’s always fun to get them out and reminisce about the fun times I’ve had with my family over the past 50+ years. The bell bottom pants, mini skirts, madras plaids, hair styles, eye glasses and waist lines, are a great source of amusement to our children and grandchildren. Time has been pretty good to me, and my family, but the photos are starting to fade and become tattered, so I’ve started the long and laborious project of scanning them and saving them digitally. Muhammad reaches out to KCSubmitted by Darin on Wed, 2008-10-01 15:08.Chiefs coach Herm Edwards said on his conference call Wednesday that Panthers WR Muhsin Muhammad contacted them to vouch for recent acquisition Mark Bradley. The Chiefs signed the former Chicago second-rounder, who Muhammad played with during his three years with the Bears. Muhammad called KC's pro personnel director Ray Farmer (who used to co-host a sports talk radio show here) to put in a word for Bradley. Wed. injury updateSubmitted by Darin on Wed, 2008-10-01 10:27.The Panthers held five players out of Wednesday's practice, including both starting tackles. LT Jordan Gross (concussion) and RT Jeff Otah (ankle) were out, along with CB Ken Lucas (ankle), S Quinton Teal (ankle) and QB Matt Moore (leg). Gross was at least outside, which is probably a good sign, since he's not sitting in a cool, dark room. QB Jake Delhomme practiced fully, despite taking a knee to the quad that had him hobbling Sunday. For his efforts last week, Delhomme was also named NFC offensive player of the week. Read a banned book!Submitted by vawilcox on Wed, 2008-10-01 10:18.That statement alone would get me tarred and feathered in some places. But it's an appropriate challenge for the 27th annual Banned Books Week, which runs through Saturday. The week is sponsored by the American Library Association, the American Society of Journalists and Authors and others. It celebrates the freedom to read, the choice of every adult to decide what he reads, for parents to make the choices for their children. It's a counter to censorship, to the banning and burning of the written word that has taken place since ink was laid to paper and someone objected. Should the government bail out struggling financial institutions to fix the economy?Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 2008-09-30 13:49.Fox just called me a loserSubmitted by Darin on Mon, 2008-09-29 10:13.Was asking Panthers coach John Fox earlier if he was particularly disturbed about leading the league in penalties (38), considering he's always preached a "smart and tough" mantra. "I’m more concerned about our record than stats," Fox replied. "And the most important stat is that W and L column. Always has been and always will be. "I think I’ve even said stats are for losers." I suppose that's fair, and I give him credit. Not once did he bring up the fact that teams get more penalties when they're playing without their starting quarterback. We almost had an Oprah momentSubmitted by Darin on Sun, 2008-09-28 16:41.The week before the opener, CB Ken Lucas was giving me a hard time for asking him about Steve Smith. This was the same day Lucas said if it was up to him, Smith would have played the first two games. "If you were Oprah Winfrey or some kind of talk show I’d be more willing to talk about it,” Lucas said when I asked how their relationship had grown. Well, Sunday afternoon, the waterworks were getting warmed up, as he talked about Smith giving him the ball from his 56-yard touchdown. It wasn't all that dusty in the locker room, and it wasn't just sweat dripping in his eyes. Post-game injury updateSubmitted by Darin on Sun, 2008-09-28 13:19.Apparently, LT Jordan Gross was lucid enough to talk to teammates after suffering a nasty concussion Sunday, but I wouldn't bet on him playing next week against Kansas City. He was knocked out cold in the first quarter, and spoke to his teammates at halftime. RT Jeff Otah left with what he called a sprained right ankle. He's had problems with the left for most of the last year, but indicated afterward this one wasn't so bad. Otah hauled offSubmitted by Darin on Sun, 2008-09-28 11:28.RT Jeff Otah just limped off the field with an apparent left knee injury. He got off the field under his own power, but was hauled in on a cart moments ago. (Update 3:18 p.m.) It's actually his left ankle, and they're saying he's questionable to return. That's the one that's been a problem for him since last year at Pitt, the one that dropped his draft stock to the point the Panthers could take him 19th. Nice gesture from 89Submitted by Darin on Sun, 2008-09-28 10:30.After WR Steve Smith spiked the ball he scored his 56-yard touchdown with, he had to plead with a fan to give it back to him. Then he took it to the sideline, and gave it to CB Ken Lucas. Call it a peace offering for the broken nose. Gross down (updated)Submitted by Darin on Sun, 2008-09-28 09:32.LT Jordan Gross just went down, and this place got really quiet, really quickly. He went face down at the end of a DeAngelo Williams run, apparently kicked in the head by LB Micahel Boley. He's sitting up now, and they've taken away the stretcher. He is being hauled out on a cart for testing. (Update 1:29 p.m.) They just announced Gross has a head injury and will not return. That's a concussion, and probably good news, considering what it looked like. For the temporal matters, it looks like they're moving Travelle Wharton out to LT and bringing in Geoff Hangartner to play LG. |
